The Best Time to Visit Mauritania

Tourist Season from September 1st to May 1st

At Epic Mauritania Tours, we offer Mauritania tours all-year-round. Not all travel agencies can say the same. However, the tourist season in Mauritania is from September 1st to May 1st. In this article, we want to outline a few factors such as holidays and temperatures, for you to consider the best time to visit Mauritania.

Best Months to Visit Mauritania – November to February

The months from November to February are typically considered the best time to visit Mauritania. You can expect milder temperatures in Mauritania during these months, especially in the Sahara desert and surrounding regions. These months are the peak tourist season for those exploring the Sahara desert. Keep in mind that most of our tours include spending multiple nights in the Sahara. Another advantage to these months is that there are less sandstorm activity compared to the hotter months.

Besides the Sahara, the November to February period also provide better conditions for birdwatching at the Banc d’Arguin National Park. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as a major breeding site for migratory birds and breeding birds, including flamingos, pelicans and terns.

Hottest Months to Visit Mauritania – March to June

Mauritania can get extremely HOT during the months from March to June, with temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F)! Travel during these months can be very uncomfortable with very dry and dusty conditions. In fact, many of the locals may even have a cottage home elsewhere where they will reside in a cooler housing during these hotter months.

Visiting Mauritania During Ramadan and Eid

Since we offer private Mauritania tours all year round, this means we work during the month-long Ramadan and Eid (Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha). Muslims worldwide use the Hijri calendar to determine the dates of these religious holidays. This Hijri calendar being a lunar calendar is approximately 11 days shorten than the solar Gregorian calendar. This means these Islamic holidays occur about 11 days earlier than the year before on the Gregorian calendar.

Ramadan in Mauritania: What to Expect?

  • Slower Pace of Life During Daytime: Many shops will open later than usual as the owners and employees try to recover from their late night of feasting and family visits. Government offices and banks may have reduced hours.
  • Restaurants/Cafés: Most are closed during daytime, but some restaurants catering to foreigners may be open.
  • No Eating in Public: Although non-Muslims are not expected to participate in Ramadan, but it is important to know the local customs and remember to respect them. This includes avoiding eating, drinking, smoking and chewing gum in public places. It is okay to do these things in private.
  • Livelier Nights: After sunset, families and communities break the fast together with a feast. After the breaking of the fast, you will find the streets to be filled with life and vibrancy.
