As of January 2025, it is no longer possible to obtain a Mauritania tourist visa upon arrival in Mauritania.
The good news is that a new Electronic Visa system has been introduced as a replacement. It is supposed to simplify the visa application process, but we have found that there are still a few kinks to be worked out. In this article, we will outline a few important things to note when using the electronic Mauritania tourist visa system.
Electronic Visa
Before you travel, you must apply for an e-visa online via the website of the Mauritanian National Agency for the Population Register and Secure Titles. There are options to apply for an e-visa for the duration of 30 days, 90 days, 360 days, and 720 days. Complete the online application form with your personal information and required documents. The following are a few helpful note for each section of the application form:
General Information
- Arrival Date – The arrival date cannot be less than two days from today
- Address in Mauritania – Enter the address of the hotel in Nouakchott where you will spend the first night
- Description of the reason for travel – This is a mandatory field with at least 50 characters
- Supporting Document – These are optional
Passport Information
- Passport Expiration Date – The passport expiration date must be at least six months from today
Photo Information
A digital photo of you must be uploaded with the following specifications:
- Must be less than 400 KB.
- Must be exactly 480×640 pixels.
- Only JPG, JPEG files are accepted.
- The photo must be in color with no filters.
- The photo must have been taken within the last 6 months.
- The background must be plain white or light-colored.
- A neutral expression with both eyes open is required.
- The head must be centered and directly facing the camera.
- Not allowed, except for medical reasons. Frames must not cover the eyes, and there must be no glare or shadows.
- Hearing devices and similar articles are allowed if normally worn.
- The photo must be clear, sharp, and of high quality.
- Photos must not be digitally altered or retouched.
- Photos from documents, magazines, low-quality devices, or scanned images are not acceptable.
Tracking Your Mauritania Tourist Visa Application
Once you have submitted your Mauritania tourist visa application on the website, your request will be analyzed. Once validated, you will receive an electronic visa via the email address indicated in your application form.

The system issues Mauritania tourist visas based on date priority. Many of our customers claim to have their Mauritania tourist visa approved about one week prior to the travel start date. In urgent situations, we may be able to manually check your Mauritania tourist visa application progress in Mauritania if you provide us with your passport number and confirmation code.
Arriving in Mauritania
Remember to bring a printout of this electronic visa during your travel to Mauritania. You will need to present this upon arrival at the Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport. Once you step off the plane, follow the signs to reach the immigration area where a customs officer will capture your biometric data. Here you will need to present your e-visa confirmation and pay the e-visa fees in exact cash in Euros or US Dollars. Change and receipts are not given. Visa fees will vary depending on your passport country and your duration of stay. The chart below indicates the visa fees for each category when the e-visa was first announced in January 2025.
