My MNA tour of Mauritania was a dream come true! The biggest highlight was spending 3 nights camping in the Sahara with the team (Mohamed, guide; Labat, driver; Lachir, cook), and a very close second was chatting to the keeper of the manuscripts in the Chinguetti UNESCO library! I love a desert landscape, and Mauritania really delivers, from gravel desert to giant sand dunes and every combination in between, including the monolith of Ben Amera (largest in Africa, and second in the world after that big rock in Australia). The food cooked for me along the way was transcendent, and the best non-Lachir-prepared meal was at the guesthouse in Ouadane where I got to try the savory millet/wheat pancakes with a camel meat stew. Drinking tea with the team was always a treat, and Labat is the best desert tea-maker! Mohamed was an absolutely fantastic & knowledgeable guide, and my favorite unexpected part of working with him were the cultural discussions every day after dinner – an unparalleled value-add.
This was my second trip with MNA (first was to Tunisia in 2023), and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Super-helpful, patient, and communicative on top of being highly organized with a great network of local support in each country. I can’t wait to see where I may go with MNA next!
